Supplementary information

Aquatic herb,  with stout creeping rhizome 1 -5m, rhizomes with many constricted nodes and stout internodes, bearing many black scale-like leaves and foliage leaves. Foliage leaves peltate, orbicular; petioles 1 -2m, with scattered small prickles.  Flower with many carpels, carpels immersed in the pits of a sponge, obconical, accrescent receptacle; stamens numerous, with clavate appendages at apex; pedicels as long as or longer than petioles, also scattered with small prickles.
