Semi-deciduous tree, basal part of trunk buttressed; bark brown or greyish white tinged with brown, cracking into long irregular strips. Leaves trimorphic, spirally arranged. Leaves on mature perennial branchlet and fertile branchlet, scalelike, thickened, sessile, ca. 2mm long. Leaves on anuual branchlet of mature plant in 3 row, subulate, spreading, deciduous with annual branchlet. Leaves on annual branchlets of young trees and seedlings often 2-ranked, sessile, linear, flat, thin, deciduous.
